Janis tightens points race with quarter- final finish at Torco Race Fuels Northern Nationals

With point’s leader Shannon Jenkins failing to qualify for the event that left the door open for Janis to gain some ground. On the Eaton team’s first qualifying attempt driver, Mike Janis, guided his Jan-Cen Powered 05’ Stratus to a 6.261 elapsed time at 230.80 miles per hour, good enough for a provisional second. On their second attempt Janis and crew slowed to a 6.29 at just over 229.16. During the final qualifying session Janis was bumped to 4th on the ladder but the Eaton team had other plans as Janis rocketed down the Martin 1320 with a 6.214 at 230.61, moving him into third position on the qualifying ladder. By virtue of his qualifying position Janis was paired with the number 14 qualifier, John Russo. Janis quickly disposed of Russo with a 6.234 elapsed time to Russo’s uncharacteristically slow 8.219. The win over Russo put Janis against Dennis Radford in round two. Radford, who qualified 11th, defeated Quain Stott in round one. As the two left the starting line Janis held a slight reaction time advantage, which Radford quickly overcame. Janis then began to run down Radford but just as Janis was about to go around Radford Janis’ engine expired ending his weekend and handing the win to Radford. "As of right now we don’t know why she let go but it doesn’t look real bad because she’s still in one piece," said Crew Chief Mike Janis Jr. referring to the team’s engine. Although Janis lost one position on the points ladder he was able to gain over 40 points on the leaders and now sits just 67 points out of first with four races remaining on the Hooters IHRA schedule. "Coming into this event we knew we needed to go some rounds to start gaining on the guys ahead of us and we did, just not enough. With the top half of the ladder this tight the championship is still up for grabs and anyone in the top eight still has a good chance," said cylinder head specialist Joe Janis.
